The oldest film festival in the world, the Venice film festival is now well into its seventh decade and its pull is stronger than ever, attracting visitors from all over the world and the very best in both new and confirmed talent in the world of cinema.
Organised by the Venice Biennale, the festival offers a series of different awards for different categories of films , all of which are shown in the festival venues. The most prestigious award which can be won is the Golden Lion, for overall excellence, but many other prizes are up for grabs including the San Marco award for the best controcorrente (against the mainstream) film.
A new section, known as Orizzonti (Horizons) was opened in 2004 and is dedicated to new trends in world cinema. The intention is that it will become a kind of laboratory for experimentation and artistic liberty which will flow freely to and from the other sectors.
